Profile of Hope Mafaranga – Journalist, Editor and Mentor

 Hope Mafaranga is an experienced Ugandan journalist and editor with more than 16 years of experience in journalism. She has built her career across reporting, editing, newsroom leadership and mentoring, with a strong focus on health, environment, agriculture, science and development issues.

Throughout her career, Hope has supported and mentored young and emerging journalists, helping them strengthen their reporting, storytelling, research, interviewing and editorial skills. 


She is passionate about building the next generation of journalists who can produce accurate, impactful and public-interest journalism while adapting to the changing media environment.

As a newsroom leader, she has also contributed to developing journalists through editorial guidance, story reviews and practical coaching. Her mentorship approach emphasises ethical journalism, evidence-based reporting, strong storytelling and identifying stories that can inform communities and contribute to positive change.

Hope believes that experienced journalists have a responsibility to pass on their knowledge and skills to younger journalists to sustain the quality, credibility and relevance of journalism in Uganda.

 She is particularly interested in solutions journalism as a way of helping journalists move beyond simply highlighting problems to also reporting credible responses, lessons and possibilities that give communities hope.
