China-SADC exchange explores investment, technology and partnerships to strengthen pharmaceutical manufacturing in Southern Africa
UNAIDS, SADC, the South Africa National AIDS Council (SANAC) and the Global Health Innovations Institute (GHII) facilitated a five-day exchange between the Government of China, Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturers and regional partners, exploring how African manufacturing capacity can be strengthened and connected to technology, investment, predictable markets and regional procurement.
The programme included engagements with development and financing partners, business leaders and health experts, alongside visits to pharmaceutical manufacturing centres, aimed at forging collaborations to expand access to medicines and health innovations.
The exchange comes as countries across the region seek to strengthen health security, reduce vulnerability to global supply disruptions, and build more sustainable access to medicines, diagnostics and prevention technologies.
On Friday 4 September, at the conclusions of the five-day mission, participants will brief media on what was achieved, the practical opportunities identified, and the partnerships and next steps to be pursued.
